How we work

Beyond Animal Research (BAR) works by identifying and removing the systemic barriers that keep science tied to animal harm - so ethical, innovative science that doesn't harm animals can thrive.

We are The Science Alliance for Animals

BAR is a science alliance working with progressive scientists, institutes and organisations from the animal science and research community in Aotearoa and beyond, to align groups with traditionally opposing perspectives to deliver positive long-term change for animals.

We all want a future where animals are not harmed in science. Only together, will we make this happen!

Breaking barriers, uniting voices

The shift to science that doesn’t harm animals is long overdue, but systemic roadblocks continue to stand in the way. At BAR, we are dismantling these barriers - whether they exist in policy, funding, education, or outdated research practices.

We're also breaking down the divide between animal protectionists and researchers, uniting both sides under a shared vision: a future where animals are no longer harmed in science.

Annually, millions of animals suffer and die for science worldwide, but the reality is no scientist wants to be the one causing this harm. By fostering open communication, collaboration, and education, we're accelerating the shift toward innovative, ethical, and scientifically superior alternatives.

Animals

As sentient beings, animals deserve to live without harm, exploitation, or suffering caused by humans.

Science

The replacement of animals with validated non-animal methods will facilitate scientifically reliable, empirically valid research outcomes.

Robust and reliable, species-specific research outcomes improve the long-term health and wellbeing of animals, humans and our environment.

When NZ leads the world in the ethical use of animals for science, it will only encourage other countries to join with us.

Animal sentience

As sentient beings, animals deserve to live without harm, exploitation, or suffering caused by humans.

Ethical science

Rigorous science requires strong animal welfare and robust, ethical practices. Ethical research, testing and teaching practices that avoid harming animals will improve scientific integrity alongside public trust.

Species-specific research

Using non-harmful scientific methods that focus on humans should be how we find effective solutions for humans, just as the non-harmful study of animals should be how we find effective solutions for animals.

Non-Animal Methods (NAMS)

Replacing the harmful use of animals in science with validated non-animal methods will facilitate reliable, effective, and scientifically sound research outcomes.

Public education

Educating the wider public about how animals are used in science and innovative alternatives will improve their understanding of the ethical and scientific issues involved, ultimately shifting societal views and advancing scientific progress.
